Work out your gain or loss on a trade, including fees and break-even.
This calculator shows what you actually made or lost on a stock trade after fees. It also shows the break-even price, the sell price where you neither gain nor lose.
Profit equals shares times the sell price, minus shares times the buy price, minus fees. Return equals profit divided by what you paid.
You buy 100 shares at $25 and sell at $31 with $10 in fees. You paid $2,500 and received $3,100. Profit is $590, a 23.6 percent return on cost. The break-even price was $25.10.
Run the numbers before you trade, with a target price and a stop price, to see your possible gain and loss. If potential loss is larger than potential gain, reconsider. Check your tax situation too, since short term gains are often taxed more heavily.
Forgetting fees and spreads, ignoring taxes and judging a trade only by percent without thinking about the dollar size.
Pair it with the risk reward and position size tools. See every term in the investing glossary, try more tools in investor tools, or test yourself in Stock Jeopardy.
